Northgate lineups sweep Whitewater

Northgate tennis teams never let Wednesday’s elements off the court — namely plummeting temperatures and wind gusts of over 20 mph — play much of a role in a pair of shutout victories over Whitewater at home in Region 4-AAAAA play.

Both boys and girls lineups played through without seeing a third set, with neither the Vikings nor Lady Vikings allowing more than four games to an opponent.

Teams quickly return to the court today for a showdown with 4-AAAAA rival Starr’s Mill at home.

Girls doubles teams dominated play against Whitewater with Northgate’s No. 2 pairing of Lauren Handley and Sydney Wells earning a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win.

At the No. 1 position, Sarah Edmonds and Sarah Guilot teamed for a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

All three Lady Vikings singles players also won in straight sets. At the No. 1 position, Danielle Rankin won 6-4, 6-1 while respective No. 2 and No. 3 players Hayley Hasberger and Ally Chenowith earned 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4 decisions.

The Vikings’ No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Blocker and Alex Waldron led the way in a 5-0 victory over Whitewater’s boys. The duo won easily 6-0, 6-2.

In singles matches, Larry Sloan held off his Wildcat opponent 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Cole Chenowith won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Nate Taylor added a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position.

Northgate’s other win came as a forfeit at No. 2 doubles.

In girls exhibition matches on Wednesday, Lauren Schexnayder won 8-0 in an 8-game pro-set.
