Indians stay undefeated

East Coweta's boys lacrosse team took another early step in its state playoff hopes as well as those toward a potential Area 1-AAAAAA championship on Friday.

The Indians, now ranked No. 5 in Class AAAAAA, dominated the final two quarters of play in a 11-8 victory at Kennesaw Mountain in a battle of undefeated lineups in area play.

The win kept East Coweta (3-0) on pace with No. 1 ranked Hillgrove (6-0) and No. 3 Harrison (4-0) atop the 1-AAAAAA standings.

Battling back from a 4-3 halftime deficit, the Indians had five players finish with multiple- goal games.

East Coweta outscored Kennesaw Mountain by a 6-3 margin in the third quarter, tying the game when Carter Byrum fed Conner McMeen with 10:38 left in the period. It was the first of two third-quarter assists for Byrum, with McMeen also setting up a pair of goals in the decisive period.

Lee Steed led the Indians with three goals off six shots in the victory.

Byrum, McMeen, Sterling Tyson, and Bryce Durden each finished with two goals apiece. Adam Cahir had an assist on one of the Indians' two goals in the fourth quarter.

East Coweta senior goalie Brian DeBole and his defense kept the Indians in a tight game through halftime. Kennesaw Mountain built a slim 2-1 lead and the one-goal advantage held over the next 12 minutes of play.

DeBole finished with 19 saves, 10 of which came in the first half, to go with nine ground balls.

COLLINS HILL BOYS 8, NEWNAN 2: The Cougars continued a road-heavy start to its 2014 schedule with Zach Keene and Austin Ohliger each scoring goals for Newnan. Spencer Smith added an assist on Keene's tally.
