Northgate, ECHS girls stay unbeaten in area play

Northgate and East Coweta girls soccer lineups each remained unbeaten in area play on Friday, but while taking opposite routes to victory.

The Lady Vikings kept pace with Area 4-AAAAA rivals Starr's Mill, Whitewater and McIntosh by rolling past Ola 8-1 on the road.

All four region teams are among the top-five ranked girls soccer lineups in Class AAAAA.

Defending state champion Northgate improved its record to 5-0 and 4-0 against area opponents. Up next, however, is a rematch of last year's AAAAA championship game at Whitewater on Friday.

Taylor Hendrix and Katie Salha each scored twice and Lily Barron and Cara Rhoad also tallied goals in Friday's victory.

East Coweta, meanwhile, had to battle through regulation for the second straight game while coming off a loss in penalty kicks on Tuesday to Class AAAAAA No. 2 state-ranked Harrison.

This time, however, the Lady Indians managed to avoid overtime in a 1-0 victory over Douglas County to stay undefeated in Area 3-AAAAAA play.

Seniors Nikki Brandley and Ren Waters combined on the only goal of the game, with Waters setting up her teammate for the game winner.

The victory improved East Coweta's record to 2-0 in area play and 3-2 overall heading into Tuesday's trip to Tri-Cities (2-3, 0-2).

Newnan's girls faced Norcross in non-region play on Friday at home in a 4-0 loss. The Lady Blue Devils scored twice on opposite ends of halftime as the Lady Cougars dropped their record to 4-2 overall.

Newnan was coming off back-to-back wins over Tri-Cities (10-0) and Sandy Creek (3-1).

The Lady Cougars travel to Columbus on Monday before resuming 3-AAAAAA play on Tuesday at home against Langston Hughes (0-4).

I n boys soccer action on Friday: Douglas County 3, East Coweta 2: The Indians were tripped up in area play for the first time since 2008 while having a 24-game win streak snapped against region foes by the Tigers.

Cole Antley and Chandler Costlow scored goals for East Coweta and Jairo Ruiz added an assist in the loss which dropped the team's record to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Area 3-AAAAAA.

Douglas County remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in 3-AAAAAA.
