Cougars defeat Berkmar at PTC tournament

Newnan tennis teams battled during the first of two days of action at the Peachtree City Tournament while joined by East Coweta and Northgate at the PTC Tennis Center on Friday.

The Cougars earned a 4-1 victory over Berkmar and will resume play this morning against Roswell, which opened the tournament against Northgate. The Hornets entered this weekend with a 2-1 record.

Against Berkmar, Newnan’s boys picked up singles wins from returning players Landon Goolsby (6-0, 6-0) and Mikey Miller (6-1, 6-2) at respective No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

William Ballou, the Cougars top returning player, fell 2-6, 2-6 in his No. 1 singles match.

Newnan capped off its win over Berkmar with a sweep in doubles play. Stewart Rand and Sam Thomas won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Bennett Souter and Dalton Ayers battled back in a tiebreaker for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory.

The Lady Cougars dropped a 3-2 decision against Rockdale County late Friday picking up singles victories from Ansley Knight with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 effort in a tiebreaker and Lindley Hudson.

Teammate Olivia Dumas dropped her match at No. 1 singles in a hard-fought match against a recent signee with the University of Connecticut.

Newnan’s top doubles pairing of Ellie Waters and Elizabeth Cobb fell 6-2, 6-3 while its No. 2 doubles team of Claire Hanna and Kaitlyn Hewett also suffered a loss.
