Cougars, Gilmore earn first victory

TYRONE — Newnan broke open an early tie at Sandy Creek with a six-run rally in the third inning before adding four more in the fifth during a 12-5 victory over the Patriots on Thursday as Marc Gilmore picked up his first career win as a head coach since being promoted at the school.

“It was just a total team effort,” said Gilmore. “The guys really swung the bats. I think we had five or six doubles.”

Gilmore was just as pleased with his pitching led by starter Tanner Snellgrove, who struck out eight while pitching deep into the sixth inning. Chris Turner added four strikeouts in relief for Newnan (1-3), which faces its third straight lineup from Fayette County on Monday when the Cougars host McIntosh.

Competitive in three previous losses, Newnan dominated for the first time this spring while taking an 11-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Both teams struck for runs in the first, with Snellgrove giving up a leadoff extra-base hit that led to Sandy Creek’s only run through the first four innings before Newnan’s bats broke the game open in the third.

Tyler Davis went 3-for-4 with at least two doubles and three RBIs in the win. Justin Groover also had a multi-hit game with 2 RBIs and pinch runner Tucker McGibbon scored twice with at least two stolen bases.

The Cougars also picked up two hits from first-baseman Caleb McElwaney. Drew Oldham and Turner also had hits, with the latter driving in a pair of runs.
