EC, Newnan girls open area play with victories

East Coweta and Newnan girls soccer teams open Area 3-AAAAAA play with road victories on Tuesday.

The Lady Indians made quick work of Langston Hughes on a wet afternoon of soccer as Anna Lauzon and Nikki Brandley each scored three times in a 10-0 victory that ended by mercy rule with 11 minutes still left in regulation.

Newnan’s girls, meanwhile, gutted out a 2-1 victory at home on goals from Hannah Thomas and Erin Bright to put both of the county’s lineups out to 1-0 starts in the 3-AAAAAA standings.

East Coweta senior Serenity Waters also scored twice against Langston Hughes and added a team-high three assists. Junior midfielder Lynnsey Danford also set up three goals.

Ashton Rohrschnieder finished with a goal and an assist for the Lady Indians (2-0, 1-0). Haley Roberts also scored for East Coweta and Morgan Haase finished with an assist.

Both lineups return to non-region play on Friday. Newnan travels to Peachtree Ridge while East Coweta hosts Starr’s Mill.

In boys soccer action on Tuesday:

East Coweta 8, Langston Hughes 0: Christian Wendt scored twice among seven Indians that tallied goals in a successful 3-AAAAAA opener while also improving to 2-0 overall.

Justin Sharp, Zac Slaton, Cole Antley, Jairo Ruiz, Matthew Shumake and Jose Mosquera also scored against the Panthers. Todd Davis, David Ahn, Slaton, Antley and Shumake added assists.

Westlake 2, Newnan 1: The Cougars dropped their Region 1-AAAAAA opener at home against the Lions (1-1, 1-0). Newnan (0-3) looks for its first win on Friday against Peachtree Ridge (3-1) in a non-region match.
