Lady Cougars win season opener, boys fall to GAC

Newnan lacrosse teams opened the 2014 season over back-to-back nights with the Cougars falling to Greater Atlanta Christian despite 17 saves from goalie Jordan Surrett and the Lady Cougars holding off North Cobb for a 10-7 victory.

Newnan’s girls opened the year on Friday with five unanswered goals including two each from Savannah Ohliger and Sable Hawkins en route to a 7-2 halftime lead.

Ohilger finished with a team-high four goals including a hat-trick in the first half to go with two assists. Hawkins capped off a hat-trick of her own early in the second as the Lady Cougars built a 8-3 lead.

North Cobb’s Taylor Hawkins led all scorers with a game-high five goals.

Megan Diebboll, Courtney Darrow and Anne Jarrett also scored for Newnan, with Jarrett’s tally with 20:52 pushing the Lady Cougars further ahead 9-3 before North Cobb closed with four of the last five goals of the game.

Diebboll led Newnan with six ground ball scoops while Hope Overton made 11 saves in goal for the Lady Cougars.

Newnan’s JV girls also won its season opener, defeating North Cobb 5-3 behind five goals from freshman Rachael McMahon.

Boys teams had a tougher time finding the net against strong lineups from Greater Atlanta Christian. The Cougars’ varsity fell 11-0 on the road as the Spartans added their second consecutive shutout to open the 2014 season.

Mike McMahon led the defensive effort with seven ground balls.

Newnan’s JV boys fell 13-2 to GAC with Brycen Buchanan contributing both goals for the Cougars before leaving with an injury.
