Lady Cougars fall to Lowndes in first round

VALDOSTA - Newnan's first trip to the Class AAAAAA girls basketball tournament was short lived Friday as the Lady Cougars fell to Region 1-AAAAAA champion Lowndes 62-29.

The Lady Cougars ended the season with a 6-22 record after entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed out of Region 3-AAAAAA. It was Newnan's first state playoff appearance since the 2007-08 season.

Newnan kept the game under double digits in the first quarter and only trailed 17-10.

The Lady Vikings put the game away in the second quarter with a 19-4 run to lead 36-14 at the break.

Newnan earned its spot in the playoffs with a 46-44 victory over East Coweta in the Region 3-AAAAAA quarterfinals, but has scored less than 30 points in its final three games, losing to Westlake 60-27, and Langston Hughes 57-26 before Friday's loss to Region 1-AAAAAA champion Lowndes.

Lowndes advances to play Hillgrove or Alcovy on Monday.
