Lady Vikings, East Coweta lineups win

Northgate’s defending Class AAAAA state champion girls soccer team opened the 2014 season much the same way it ended last year — with a dominating victory.

Lilly Barron scored twice and added an assist and teammate Reece Weaver also had two points in a 3-1 win over Spalding in a scrimmage Friday at Henry Seldon Field.

The Lady Vikings built a comfortable 3-0 lead before the Lady Jaguars picked up a late goal in the second half.

Katie Salha assisted Barron for the opening goal of the game before Barron and Weaver each set up one another to pad the lead.

Weaver finished with a goal and an assist as Northgate teams prepare for Tuesday’s regular season opener at Carrollton.

East Coweta’s boys also opened the season on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Ola in its first action since reaching last year’s Class AAAAAA semifinals. The Lady Indians dominated the opening game, scoring seven times in a 7-3 rout of the Lady Mustangs.

Both ECHS teams open the regular season Tuesday at home against Druid Hills.
