Trinity battles into OT on tough night for boys

Varsity boys basketball teams struggled on Tuesday, with Coweta County coming up short of a victory among five region contests.

The losses included a heartbreaker by Trinity, which battled Holy Spirit into overtime of its GISA Region 1-AAA matchup before falling 79-75.

The Lions battled back down four points early to take a slim 39-37 lead into halftime but couldn’t hold off a comeback by the Cougars in the fourth quarter.

Trinity maintained its two-point lead after three periods before Holy Spirit rallied back behind a 37-point individual effort from its leading scorer.

Spencer Bryan led the Lions with 20 points while Daniel Jones and Luke Hammock added 15 and 14, respectively, to help counter their opponent’s production. But the Cougars outscored Trinity 10-6 in overtime to pull out their first 1-AAA win of the season.

Holy Spirit improved to 1-6 and 4-10 overall while the Lions fell to 3-13 and 1-3 in 1-AAA. Trinity has a makeup game next week on Monday at home against Weber.

IN TUESDAY’S OTHER BOYS GAMES

Douglas County 88, East Coweta 50: The Tigers used an uptempo game and long-range shooting Tuesday night to knock off the Indians, which trailed by just three points after one quarter 18-15.

But East Coweta (3-18, 1-6 in Region 3-AAAAAA) hit just one shot from the field in the second quarter as the Tigers (16-4, 5-3) pulled away for a 40-22 halftime advantage. .

The Indians were playing without head coach Ronnie Vandiver who was sitting out a one-game suspension.

The team’s lone field-goal came early in the second period on one of senior Jeremy Farmer’s five 3-pointers to cut East Coweta’s deficit to 20-16. Farmer added three treys in the third period to finish with 15 points on Senior Night.

Fellow senior Zhakeer Jervey added 11 in the loss.

Zach Walker, Dee Lawal and Delavonte Powell also had 3-pointers for the Indians.

The Tigers were just as efficient with 3-pointers, hitting five, including 3 from Corey Tillery, who finished with a team-high 12 points with Brandon Robinson. Justin Bridges had 11 in the win.

Dominion Christian 64, Heritage School 59: After watching a two-point halftime deficit blossom to 11 after three quarters, the Hawks put together a spirited comeback that fell short among two teams battling for second place in GISA Region 1-AAA.

Dominion improved to 5-2 in the region and 10-9 overall while Heritage fell to 10-6 and 3-2 among three teams with two losses in 1-AAA behind first-place Loganville Christian (12-3, 6-0).

Rich Yancey led the Hawks, which took a 17-14 lead after one quarter, with 17 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Cole Jones added 16 points and five rebounds while guard Glavin Groover had 10 points. Heritage was just 9 of 19 from the free-throw line.

Hughes 47, Newnan 45: The Cougars fell further behind in the race for seeding in Region 3-AAAAAA after losing for the third time in their last four region games.

The loss dropped Newnan to 3-4 in 3-AAAAAA heading into tonight’s game against Douglas County (16-4, 5-3) while now two losses behind Tri-Cities (11-10, 5-2) and three behind first-place Westlake (22-2, 7-1).
