Heritage, Trinity tip off tonight after long layoff

by Doug Gorman

Fans hoping to watch Trinity Christian and the Heritage School basketball teams renew their rivalry had to put their plans on hold for 24 hours after the GISA Region 1-AAA doubleheader was postponed a day.

The rematch between the two teams was originally scheduled for Friday night at the Heritage School, but postponed when icy road conditions early Friday morning resulted in both schools calling off classes for a fourth straight day.

Now, the two teams will play their games tonight.

Girls action tips off at 6 p.m., with the boys set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

It is part of a full day off basketball action at Heritage with the Lady Hawks middle school girls team playing Loganville Christian in the MACAC Playoffs starting at 2 and the middle school boys team playing Creekside Christian at 3 p.m, also in a MACAC playoff.

Trinity and Heritage will also meet in a JV boys game at 4:30 p.m before the start of the varsity games.

In the first meeting early this year, Heritage swept Trinity on the road with the the Lady Hawks beating the Lady Lions 54-47 behind the play of freshman Kara Groover who poured in 31 points.

Heritage’s boys’ team knocked off Trinity 65-49 thanks to Cole Jones double-double that included 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Local GHSA teams also postponed Friday’s games, which will force Northgate, Newnan and East Coweta will play at four region games over the next week.

The Northgate and East Coweta non-region game set for tonight on the Vikings’ home court has be cancelled and won’t be rescheduled.

However, all three public high schools in Coweta County play four games next week after having contests postponed on Tuesday and Friday.

Northgate, which was scheduled to play at Whitewater last Tuesday, will now play the Region 4-AAAAA contest Monday, and Starr’s Mill at home on Wednesday as part of the school’s Senior Night activities.

Northgate also plays a makeup game at Creek- side on Friday and a play-in game at Whitewater on Saturday in hopes of advancing to the Region 4-AAAAA Tournament.

Newnan will play its first game in 10 days Tuesday at Langston Hughes. The Cougars also take on Douglas County on Wednesday before hosting rival East Coweta on Friday.

Newnan and East Coweta played to the wire in boys game during the first meeting of the year with the Cougars winning 62-60 in boys action. Newnan’s girls won 56-55 when Chaycie Googins caught, the ball in the lane, turned and converted the shot at the buzzer.

The Cougars close out the regular season the following day in a rematch with Westlake on the road in Atlanta.

East Coweta will also finish its season with a hectic sched- ule next week. The Indians play at Westlake next Monday, at home against Douglas County on Tuesday before renewing their rivalry with Newnan on Friday, and playing their final regular season game at Langston Hughes next Saturday.

The Region 4-AAAAAA Tournament begins on Feb. 10 at McIntosh, while the Region 3-AAAAAA Tournament starts Feb. 11 at Tri-Cities High School.
