Starr's Mill sweeps East Coweta

East Coweta's defensive pressure smothered Starr's Mill through the opening eight minutes of play on Friday at John Thrower Gym.

But its shooting remained off the mark in a 56-33 loss to the Lady Panthers.

Staying aggressive early on both ends, the Lady Indians built themselves a 10-8 firstquarter lead while relying on 11 of 19 shooting from the freethrow line. By halftime, Starr's Mill had solved East Coweta's full-court press, going on a 17-4 run in the third quarter and finishing with 19 field goals to the Lady Indians eight in the non-region victory.

The Lady Panthers outscored East Coweta's girls 31-13 combined in the second and third quarters led by Katie Wilson's team-high 14 points, nine of which came over the 16-minute span.

After attempting 19 freethrows in the first half, the Lady Indians were held to just 11 the rest of the game, falling behind 39-23 after three quarters.

Quentina Roberts and Eboni Williams each led East Coweta with eight points in the loss.

The Lady Indians look to rebound quickly today at home while hosting county rival Northgate in a non-region doubleheader.

East Coweta's boys also fell to Starr's Mill on Friday, while unable to contain the Panthers and 6-foot-7 senior Jeremiah Vrudny in an 81-57 loss.

Vrudny scored 26 points in 23 minutes, 17 of which by halftime as Starr's Mill built a 43-33 lead before the Panthers began the third quarter on a 10-0 run while benefitting from the Indians' offensive struggles.

Both East Coweta lineups failed to keep leads past the early minutes of the game, with Zach Walker connected on consecutive three pointers to keep the Indians within an early 8-7 deficit. A five-point surge kept the hosts within range, down 19-15 while outsized against both Vrudny and Starr's Mill 6-8 center Terrence Harper.

The Panthers duo combined for 19 of their team's first 21 points.

Starr's Mill pulled away, however, with a 12-0 run in the closing minutes of the second quarter while getting two 3-pointers from senior guard David Watson to push further ahead 43-20.
