Heritage holds off Flint River; Lady Hawks fall

Heritage School basketball teams split a non-region doubleheader on Thursday on the road, with the Hawks holding off Flint River and the Lady Hawks suffering their first loss of the season.

The boys game went to halftime tied 24-24 before the Hawks used a potent offensive attack in the third quarter to take a 40-36 lead heading into the final quarter.


Heritage prevailed despite shooting 32 percent (22 of 68) from the field and hitting just 48 percent from the free throw line (12 of 25).


Rich Yancey led the offensive attack for the Hawks, finishing the game with 23 points.


Although the Hawks struggled at the free throw line, Yancey sank 5 of 7 attempts.


Luke Smith added 12 points, including two from 3-point territory.


Cole Jones finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots to help Heritage to the win.


Flint River 46, Heritage School 32 (girls): The Lady Hawks fell apeart in the second half en route an elusive first loss of the 2013-14 season.


Heritage led 16-15 at the end of the first half, but couldn’t stop Flint River’s offensive explosion over the last two quarters en route to a 46-32 defeat.


Flint River outscored the Lady Hawks 31-16 in the second half to cruise to the victory.


Kara Groover led the Lady Hawks with 15 points. Sister Karlee added eight and Lillie Smith finished with seven.


Kara also finished with three rebounds to lead the team.


The Lady Hawks shot just 20 percent from the field (12 of 60).


Both Heritage School lineups now head into Christmas break before returning for the school’s annual holiday tournament starting next Friday.


Flint River teams head to Coweta County tonight for a non-region doubleheader with Trinity Christian.


Northgate’s girls team played the first game of its tournament schedule at Strong Rock on Thursday. Results were unavailable at deadline.


Newnan and East Coweta teams are off tonight before resuming play on Saturday at home.


Newnan hosts New Manchester at 1:30 p.m., while South Paulding travels to East Coweta.
