Heritage lineups sweep Loganville

Rich Yancey and Kara Groover came through with big nights to help respective basketball lineups from The Heritage School to victories over Loganville Christian on Friday at home.

But the wins came in contrasting fashions.

Coming through at the finish for a 68-59 victory, the Hawks were staring at a 10-point deficit to open the second quarter only to go on a 17-7 run to tie the game at halftime before equally dominating the third period.

Along with Yancey’s team-high 17 points, 6-foot-4 sophomore Cole Jones posted a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, eight of which came off the defensive glass as Heritage turned a 30-30 tie into a 48-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Mack Wilkins had nine points in the victory while Yancey added five rebounds and two steals. Glavin Groover posted five points and seven rebounds in the win.

The Lady Hawks, meanwhile, used a tenacious defensive effort to dominate Loganville’s girls in a sound 48-28 victory.

Kara Groover paced the Lady Hawks with a team-high 16 points as the team built a comfortable 34-14 lead at halftime after outscoring Loganville 18-5 in the second quarter.

“Our goal was to play good defense and we think if we hold a team to under 30 [points], we’ll win,” said Heritage School girls coach Derrick Clay. “We played fast on defense and executed our half-court game.”

Heritage received points from 11 players in the victory including eight from Ansley Dieckmann and five from Kate Everett. Karlee Groover, Zofia Powell, Ruthia Powell, Maggie Crosby, Abbie Farr and Amanda Windom each had at least one field goal. Rebekah Henson also contributed to the scoring for the Lady Hawks.

COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN 54, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 44: The Lions had three players contribute at least nine points, but were forced to play catch-up early after falling behind 18-9 after one quarter.

Trinity outscored Community, a late addition to the region schedule, 16-10 in the fourth quarter while led by fresh- man Jacob Downs’ 13 points. Spencer Bryan had 10 and Daniel Jones added nine in the loss.
