Lions get back on track with win on Senior Night
All the things that had eluded Trinity Christian during a three-game losing streak to open GISA Region 2-AAA play fell back into place at just the right time for the Lions.
Trinity Christian scored twice in the first quarter, held its opponent to 115 total yards and capitalized on at least five turnovers in a 33-14 victory over Westminster-Augusta at home on the Serengeti on Senior Night.
'It was a special night for our seniors,' said Lions head coach Chris Hanson. 'I respect what they've done for our program.'
Behind Jared Farlow's gamehigh 168 yards rushing, the Lions built a 12-0 lead after one quarter, its first advantage following the opening period in a five-game span, while controlling momentum in a battle between a pair of region lineups fighting for their playoff lives.
With the win, Trinity improved to 5-4 and 1-3 in 2-AAA while now needing a victory over rival Heritage School on the road next week to clinch the region's final state playoff berth. A win by the Hawks would eliminate the Lions' shot at potential back-toback trips to the GISA playoffs.
A Trinity offense that had moved the ball up and down the field last week in a 20-3 loss at Tattnall Square put together points to show for it while eliminating Westminster from playoff contention.
Lions senior quarterback Daniel Shoates scored three touchdowns and also threw a touchdown pass to Glen Whisby to put plenty of points on the scoreboard on Friday.
They were aided by a Trinity defense that regained its knack for takeaways. Linebacker Gavin Smith returned a fumble for a touchdown and Rodney Neely, Joe Hogan, Shoates and Whisby all had interceptions that halted Westminster drives. Senior Conner Owen added a sack and a fumble recovery while senior J.D. Farlow had six tackles and a pass breakup.
While pleased with the victory, 'it got sloppy at times and we still turned the ball over,' Hanson said. 'We've got to clean up the mental mistakes and the turnovers and get focused on this next game against Heritage.'
