Lady Vikings return to Elite 8

Northgate’s volleyball program has made a habit out of advancing to the Elite 8.

This year’s Lady Vikings punched a return ticket to this weekend’s Class AAAAA quarterfinals with a 3-0 sweep on the road over Harris County (25-19, 25-16, 25-19).

It’s the fourth time in five years Northgate has reached the Elite 8, advancing as far as the Class AAAA Final Four in 2009.

Northgate is one of three teams from Area 4-AAAAA to reach the state quarterfinals.

Region rivals Whitewater and McIntosh added respective sweeps over Clarke Central and McIntosh to advance on Tuesday night.

Other remaining quarterfinalsts in Class AAAAA include Dunwoody, Appalachee, Glynn Academy, Greenbrier and Sequoyah.

The Georgia High School Association will re-seed the eight teams before play resumes Saturday.

“I am really excited to be going back to the Elite 8,” Northgate head coach Matt Trucks said. “We went in as the fourth seed, and have won some hard matches.”

Northgate opened the Class AAAAA tournament a week ago with a 3-2 victory over Lithia Springs.

There were no secrets between the Lady Vikings and Harris County in Tuesday night’s second-round meeting.

Northgate swept Harris County twice during the regular season, but Trucks admits it was a much different Lady Tigers team that took the floor this time.

“They are so much more improved than the team we saw early in the season,” he said.

Northgate’s Randee Harvel finished the three-set sweep with 10 kills. She has now set the school’s single-season record with 400 kills. She also added nine digs.

Erin Valentine finished with five digs.

Lexie Rose added eight kills en route to the win.

Taylor Bigler closed out the second-round victory with 16 assists and five aces.

Kalie Whiddon added seven assists and Erin Valentine finished with five digs.

Chattahoochee sweeps Newnan: The Newnan Lady Cougars season came to an end Tuesday at the Class AAAAAA Sweet 16 after getting swept by Chattahoochee 3-0.

It was the second straight year that Chattahoochee ended Newnan’s season in the second round of the tournament.

Full details were unavailable at deadline.

Newnan, which beat Peachtree Ridge 3-1 to open the state playoffs last week, closed out its season with a 25-15 record.

Seniors Julie Masoheimer, Shundra Hill and Shantay James closed out their high school volleyball careers.
