County lineups look to reach GHSA Elite 8
A volleyball lineup has represented Coweta County each of the last three seasons in the Georgia High School Association’s Elite 8 tournament.
Today, three schools again look to make it an even four when the first round of Class AAAAAA and AAAAA tournaments begin tonight with best-of-5 matches.
Eighth-ranked East Coweta takes an impressive 42-6 record into tonight’s state opener against Mill Creek. The Lady Indians are coming off an Area 2-AAAAAA championship following a schedule that included wins against three of the remaining nine schools in the top-10 state rankings in their classification.
East Coweta’s 42-win season came under the direction of first-year head coach Amber McClure. Her squad was also the Coweta County champions for the second straight year.
“The girls know they have played in some big matches,” McClure said. “They have been challenged all year.
Mill Creek (23-17) finished fourth out of Area 6-AAAAAA.
Newnan heads to the state tournament as the No. 2 seed.
The Lady Indians entertain Mill Creek (23-17), the fourth-seed out of Area 6-AAAAAA.
Newnan (24-15) also will host a first-round match tonight against Peachtree Ridge, (12-17), the third seed out of Area 6-AAAAAA.
Both local Class AAAAAA matches begin at 6:30.
In Class AAAAA, Northgate (27-25) will play its first-round match on the road against Area 3-AAAAA champion Lithia Springs (18-3), after finishing fourth in its area tournament. The Lady Vikings, however, equally take a No. 4 state ranking into the state playoffs.
Teams from Northgate’s 4-AAAAA alignment make up four of the top-five ranked teams in their classification.
The Lady Indians enter the state tournament with an 11-game winning streak, including 10 in straight sets.
