Newnan squeezes out win over McIntosh

PEACHTREE CITY - Newnan's softball team squeezed out another big victory on Wednesday while continuing to prepare for next week's Region 3-AAAAAA tournament at home.

The Lady Cougars used a successful squeeze bunt from Lindsay Stewart for a goahead run in the top of the fifth and added an insurance run moments later on a passed ball for the difference in a 4-2 road win over McIntosh and starting pitcher Hannah Newton.

The win pushed Newnan's record to 17-4 overall heading into Friday's showdown with Class AA top-ranked Heard County. The Lady Braves (19-3) have split games against Coweta lineups over the past week, squeaking past East Coweta 3-1 and falling 5-4 to Northgate on Monday.

Newnan picked up two hits from Arden Jobe and quickly responded to tie Wednesday's game at 2-2 after McIntosh took its only lead of the game in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Maysen Willard's led off the top of the third by lining a double to left field, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored just as quickly when freshman Hannah Scarbrough followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game.

Newton did her best to keep Newnan in check during a 10-strikeout effort on the mound for McIntosh. Brit Ostander added two strikeouts in the final two innings despite allowing the final run to cross on her passed ball.

Meanwhile, Lady Cougars junior pitcher Tori Loveless held McIntosh scoreless for the final four innings while able to get herself out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth following three walks.

After Newnan took a lead for good, Loveless retired the side in order in the fifth and then stranded two more Lady Chiefs runners in the bottom of the sixth with a strikeout.

The junior hurler then capped off a three-hit, five-strikeout performance by retiring the side in order in the seventh to complete the victory.

The Lady Cougars made the most of six hits in a game that featured just two hits for extra bases. Stewart finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs to go with Jobe's two hits. Loveless also had a single in the victory.
