Powell, Hawks pick up titles at Loganville
Ruthie Powell and The Heritage School's boys cross country team both took home firstplace honors in last weekend's LCA Lion Prowl Invitational hosted by Loganville Christian.
Powell, last year's GISA Class AAA state champion, put together a personal-best time of 18:37 to lead the Lady Hawks while also capturing at least her third meet victory this season. The effort in Loganville - which included a field of 105 runners - topped her previous win at the Dominion Dash on Sept. 7 by nearly five seconds.
Ashley Wood added a fifth-place finish for the Lady Hawks in 19:59.
While unable to catch boys individual winner Aaron Copeland of Trinity-Dublin, who crossed first among 136 runners in 14:52, the Hawks had all five scorers packed between 10th-14th position led by senior Tanner Brandner's mark of 17:20.
Junior David Martin (11th, 17:24), sophomore Parker Jones (12th, 17:31), senior John Dean Uglum (13th, 17:43) and sophomore Tom Pattiz (14th, 17:47) all followed right behind Brandner to give Heritage a 45 among team standings to finish 15 ahead of Trinity-Dublin (60) and 32 ahead of Southland (77) among 15 schools.
Other finishers for Heritage among boys included Gage Warren (45th), Matt Harmon (50th), Hayden Jones (68th) and McCullough Burns (78th). Mary McGreggor also competed for the Lady Hawks.
Trinity Christian's boys placed 11th at the Loganville meet led by Ben Peacock's 23rd-place effort of 18:21. Alex Rhodes (19:47), Drew Taylor (20:56), Daniel Luehm (21:44) and Franklin Rhodes (22:23) contributed to the scoring. The Lady Lions finished 10th overall led by senior Maddie Chapman's time of 25:15 in 48th place. Freshman Maggie Wheeler (26:13), junior Brooke Koller (27:46), sophomore Olivia Boughton and junior Bianca Sharpe contributed to the Trinity scoring.
Trinity teams were at Stratford Academy on Monday and will also compete at the Rams Invitaional, hosted by Covenant Academy, on Saturday.
The Heritage School's varsity and JV teams are off until Sept. 25, when they travel to Mill Springs in a meet also including Trinity Christian lineups.
