Evans, Lee, Madras look to build off 1-0 starts
Evans, Madras and Lee middle football teams will take 1-0 records into week two of the 2013 Coweta County Middle School Athletic League season tonight, with Evans and Lee set to kick off tonight at East Coweta’s Garland Shoemake Stadium.
Both opened the year with respective victories last week against Smokey Road (30-16) and East Coweta (30-14).
Madras won a 44-27 shootout behind three touchdowns from Kyle McLaren.
Jaquez Walker scored twice, including an 80-yard touchdown run, for Evans in its 30-16 win over Smokey Road, which also included an interception return for a score by A.J. Alford. Elliott Schubert and Patrick Henson freed teammates for Evans’ second and third score of the game.
Defensively, Justin Geter had a pair of pass breakups in the end zone for the Cougars and Cedric Hall saved a potential touchdown late in the first half with a tackle.
Lee defeated East Coweta 30-14 on a pair of touchdowns runs by Chris Reid and Joshua Russell. Down 6-0 early, Reid tied it for the Timberwolves with a 5-yard run and Russell added the extra point to give Lee a lead for good.
Russell added scoring runs of 12 and 25 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively, with P.J. Harris’ extra point on the latter pushing the Timberwolves lead to 22-6.
Reid ended the Lee scoring in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard score, followed by an extra point from Trejon Townsend.
Madras had five players score touchdowns in its opening victory over Arnall led by runs of 42, 8 and 7 yards by McLaren.
Nick Carter (31 yards) and Jack Eskew (9 yards) also ran for touchdowns for the Eagles, while Will Home caught a 13-yard pass for a score.
Levi Robinson added a touchdown for Madras on special teams on a 65-yard kickoff return.
