Lady Vikings split non-region matches
by Doug Gorman
Northgate head volleyball coach Matt Trucks couldn't help but quote the first line of Charles Dickens' classic 'A Tale of Two Cities' Thursday night as the Lady Vikings split a pair of matches at home.
'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,' Trucks said.
The veteran coach was referring to his teams inconsistent play in the non-region games at home Thursday.
Northgate knocked off Houston County (25-13, 25-14) before losing a three-set thriller to Harris County (25-14, 20-25, 22-25).
Several players stepped up for the Lady Vikings including Randee Harvel, who had 12 kills and four aces. Kalie Whiddon and Taylor Bigler each added 16 assists.
Each time the Lady Vikings showed their ability to rally in the matches against Harris County, but only in the first set did the comeback pay dividends.
The Lady Vikings fell behind 3-0 in the first set before rallying for the victory.
After a 10-10 tie, Northgate pulled ahead eventually taking an 18-10 lead.
They held on the rest of the way, never letting the Lady Tigers get closer than eight points down the stretch.
In the last two sets, however, Harris County built early leads and shut down Northgate rally attempts.
In game two, Harris County built a 20-10 lead and never looked back despite allow the Lady Vikings to close the gap to 24-20.
The third set of the match was a slugfest with Harris County building a 4-0 lead, but after several ties, the Lady Tigers went ahead 12-11, and stayed out front the rest of the way.
Northgate now turns its attention to area play with a quad-match on Tuesday at Whitewater that include matches against Ola and Creekside.
