WG fishing team competes for national title
Newnan High School graduate Kenny Johnson and Brandon Larry, two students at the University of West Georgia, capped off a big year of fishing last weekend, by competing in the Carhardtt National Championships. Although they finished out of the running at last week’s tournament at Lake Chatuge near Young Harris College, its been a successful year for Johnson and Larry, who started the college fishing team at the school in Carrollton this year.
Back in January, Johnson and Larry qualified for the national tournament, finishing 10th out of 120 teams with a 28-pound catch to finish 10th and qualify for last week’s event. Early this season, Johnson and Larry’s success led them to a No.-12 ranking in the national poll.
“We were more used to fishing in muddy water, with 20-pound test line,” Johnson said. “ Since the water was so clear at Lake Chatuge, we had to use 10-pound test line.
Johnson and Larry recently held a Red Cross fishing benefit where they raised $,3,000 for Oklahoma tornado victims.
Highlights of the national championship bass tournament will be shown Sunday from 11 a.m.to noon on ESPN-U.
