Smith falls short in bid to reach U.S. Amateur

Newan’s Trevor Smith, who is getting ready for his sophomore year at Coastal Georgia College, failed to qualify Wednesday for the U.S. Amateur.

Smith, who shot a 1-over-par 71 on Tuesday, finished the two-day tournament, 6-over-par during play at the Capital City Crabapple Course in Woodstock.

Smith hurt his chances to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur with a tough round of golf during Wednesday’s second round.

The Newnan resident failed to birdie a hole in the final round.

Smith ended his round with five bogeys, including on the final three holes.

Wise takes third at Piedmont Driving Club

Newnan’s Preston Wise, who will enter Newnan High School as a freshman in two weeks, has had a successful summer competing in the Atlanta Junior Golf series.

Tuesday afternoon, Wise finished third among 14 other golfers in the 13-14-year-old open division after firing a 6-over-par 78.

Wise’s scorecard included a birdie on the Par 5, 10th-hole. Wise has competed in six Atlanta Junior Golf events this summer, and Tuesday’s round was his best score.

He also took third with an 80 at Canogate at Heron Bay in Locust Grove earlier this summer.

Wise hopes to join the Newnan High School golf team this spring.
