Baik makes surge to finish sixth at Top 60 Classic

Ji Eun Baik stormed up the leaderboard to close the Georgia State Golf Association’s annual Top 60 Women’s Classic, posting four birdies during an even-round of 71 to finish tied for sixth overall.

While unable to catch tournament champion Haley Austin of McDonough, who used a 4-under 67 to leapfrog a pair of competitors in Thursday’s final round at Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Baik made an even bigger move after finishing her first 18 holes in a tie for 11th place.

The future Mississippi State player quickly closed her gap with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 3 and 4 while committing just one bogey before making the turn. Baik had 11 pars on the day and went 10 holes without adding a stroke. Along the way, she added two more birdies on par 4s at No. 13 and No. 15.

Mercedes Huarte — who along with Austin posted the only sub-par rounds on Thursday – pushed into second place while round one lader, Caitlin Watts of LaGrange, held on for third following a solid 2-over 73.

Newnan golfer Jodie Shepard’s final round of 85 included a birdie on the par-5 third hole while finishing in a tie for 29th place overall.

Up next for local players is Monday’s U.S. Junior Girls Amateur qualifier at Cartersville Country Club, featuring Newnan golfers Annie Swords and sisters Cameron and Jordan Daniel.
