Northgate trio selected to All-Region team

by Staff Reports

While Northgate was unable to see its baseball season extend into the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs following a hard-fought  three-game, first-round series, three Vikings earned selections on this year’s Region 4-AAAAA baseball team announced Wednesday.

Senior pitcher Robert Massenburg, junior outfielder James Poropatic and senior infielder Tyler Dahlberg all earned nods on this year’s All-Region team.

Dahlberg, a senior transfer, gave Northgate a boost in power numbers in a year where the landscape of high-school baseball changed due to the elimination of BBCOR aluminum bats.

The second-baseman/shortstop led the VIkings in most offensive categories including home runs (5), RBIs (32) and slugging percentage (.694) while finishing the season with a .412 batting average.

As Northgate’s starting centerfielder, Poropatic batted .416 at the leadoff spot while leading the Vikings in doubles (11) and stolen bases (14). His 22 RBIs were also second behind Dahlberg.

Massenburg, meanwhile, finished the season with a 5-3 record on the mound to go with a 2.11 ERA and a team-high 57 strikeouts.

Earning honorable mention status from Northgate were senior pitchers Matt Farmakis and Jonathan Fleckenstein, sophomore infielder Chase Allen, junior outfielder Armond Upshaw and sophomore catcher Jonathan Hamilton.

On Wednesday, among three remaining 4-AAAAA playoff teams, region champion Starr’s Mill advanced with a second-round sweep over Houston County in 2-0 and 8-1 wins, as did No. 2 seed Whitewater over Lakeside-Evans 4-3 and 7-0.

Third-seed McIntosh was eliminated by Houston County.
