East Coweta falls to top-ranked Harrison

by Staff Reports

KENNESAW — The East Coweta Lady Indians’ soccer season came to an end Tuesday night with a 5-1 loss against top-ranked Harrison in the Class AAAAAA tournament.

Playing on the road in Kennesaw, the Lady Indians had upset on their minds, taking a 1-0 lead about 15 minutes into the first half.

Serenity Waters gave the Lady Indians the first goal of the game when she took control of the ball on a breakaway and booted it past the Lady Hoyas’ keeper.

From there, the tide turned against East Coweta.

A controversial call against the Lady Indians in the box  gave the Lady Hoyas a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick and they took advantage of the opportunity and tied the game.

Late in the first half, Harrison took the lead for good when it scored off a corner kick when East Coweta put the ball in its own goal.

The loss closes out the Lady Indians’ season at 13-6.

“I am really proud of the way we played,” said East Coweta head coach Chris Luppens. “We had a couple of things that didn’t go our way.”

The Lady Hoyas hurt East Coweta’s chances for a comeback with an early third goal at the start of the second half.

“I think that third goal really broke our backs,” Luppens said.

The Lady Hoyas ended the game with three goals in the final 40 minutes to move on to the Elite 8.

Despite the loss, Luppens is already looking to the future and with good reason.

“We are really young,” he said. “We only lose one player and have started freshman and sophomores in key places all year. I am really looking forward to the future.”

East Coweta opened the playoffs with a 5-0 victory over Luella last week and was looking to ride a wave of momentum that included shutouts in the last three games.

“I think we really grew up over the past few weeks,” he said. “This is a tough loss, but we have played hard all year. I feel like we have been on the cusp of breaking through all season.”
