Northgate adds another first, sends both teams to state

Northgate’s tennis program added yet another first on Wednesday.

Both of the school’s 2013 lineups advanced to the GHSA tournament after the Lady Vikings wrapped up a third-place finish in their host Region 4-AAAAA tournament.

The effort came two days after Northgate’s boys finished fourth in 4-AAAAA to make their first return trip to the state tournament.

On Wednesday, the Lady Vikings finished 2-1, opening with a win over Ola to clinch a postseason berth and closing with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Union Grove in the third-place match.

Hayley Hasberger’s marathon 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 10-7 third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles provided the difference in earning the No. 3 seed against Union Grove. Northgate’s girls also picked up wins from top singles player Danielle Rankin (6-1, 6-1) and its No. 1 doubles team of Amy Salyards and Avery Weatherford (7-6/7-5, 6-4).

The Lady Vikings’ only loss came to top-seeded Starr’s Mill in a shutout where Northgate’s players won no more than a single game in a set.

The team was coming off a 3-1 victory to open the tournament against Ola that clinched a berth in next week’s Class AAAAA state tournament. Both Northgate teams will play opponents from 1-AAAAA.

Earning victories against Ola were Rankin at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-1, Lauren Handley at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4. The Lady Vikings’ No. 2 doubles team of Laura Bowen and Mary Salyards clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Newnan and East Coweta tennis teams travel to Douglasville today for the Region 3-AAAAAA tournament. The Lady Cougars and Lady Indians will open today’s first round.
