Heritage School moves step closer to region title

by Staff Reports

It was reign, then rain for The Heritage School girls soccer team on Thursday.

The Lady Hawks were able to hold off both impending storms and Holy Spirit long enough to add a 3-0 victory at home to move even closer to clinching a Region 1-AAA championship and an important No. 1 seed.

This year’s 1-AAA winner will hold home-field advantage through the semifinal round.

Heritage School, which moved its start time ahead an hour, wasted little time by scoring all three goals in the first 40 minutes.

Junior Ansley Dieckmann had a pair of goals for the Lady Hawks (8-0, 6-0), who remained undefeated heading into today’s game against county rivals Trinity Christian.

Today’s matches will be played at The Heritage School due to Thursday’s rain at Whitlock Park.

“We did a great job of passing the ball and moving,” said Lady Hawks coach Ron Rineer. “It was one of our better first halves of the season.”

Calista Eckert continued a strong freshman season with a goal and an assist while sophomore Sara Brillanti also assisted on a Heritage tally.

LADY COUGARS CONTINUE TO CRUISE

Newnan’s girls soccer team outscored a pair of opponents from Fayette 11-0 while picking up two non-region victories this week.

The Lady Cougars — who learned they had been crowned Coweta Cup champions just before heading into Spring Break following a recalculation of tiebreakers with East Coweta and Northgate — blanked Fayette County 5-0 on Monday and added a 6-0 win over Sandy Creek in Tyrone on Tuesday.

Newnan returns to action tonight at home with a doubleheader against Spalding County.

GOLF – TRINITY HOLDS OFF HERITAGE SCHOOL IN TRI-MATCH

Trinity Christian’s golf team was led by Tyler Anderson’s nine-hole round of 40 on Thursday as the Lions squeaked out a two-stroke win over The Heritage School during a Region 1-AAA tri-match at Canongate-on-White Oak.

Trinity finished with a score of 170 while also receiving scores of 43 from Savannah Humber and Hudson Huber.

Ethan Mansour led The Heritage School with a 42, followed by Annie Swords’ round of 43.

Holy Spirit finished third with a 174, two strokes behind Heritage School.

Trinity Christian travels to Sea Island on Monday for a match against five-time defending GISA state champions Frederica Academy.

COUGARS DEFEAT EAST COWETA

Carson Vaughn’s 1-over 37 helped lead the Newnan boys golf team to a 22-stroke victory over Region 3-AAAAAA rival East Coweta on Wednesday at Newnan Country Club.

Max Matistic added a 2-over 38 and Lanier Sealy added a 40 in the victory. John Taylor, Jordan Henry and Tyler Cook contributed to the’ effort.

Scores for East Coweta were unavailable.

Both lineups continue to prepare for the 3-AAAAAA tournament on Monday, April 22 at Summer Grove Golf Club.

GIRLS LACROSSE – LADY COUGARS CRUSH TRI-CITIES

Led by Savannah Ohliger’s 10-point effort on eight goals and two assists, Newnan’s girls lacrosse team dominated Tri-Cities for a 20-7 victory on Wednesday at Drake Stadium, snapping a five-game slide while preparing for next week’s Coweta Cup tournament.

The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead starting with Megan Dieboll’s tally before putting together six unanswered goals on each end of halftime. Gaby Busby and Dakota Overton each added three goals in the win, with Busby adding two assists.

Sydney Garmany also had two goals and two assists while Kristol Boyd added Newnan’s other tally off an assist from Jacquelyn Witt. Sidney Overton added an assist on one of Dakota Overton’s three goals.

Lindsay Stewart finished with four saves while splitting action in goal with Morgan Gardner. Garmany led Newnan with four ground-balls.
