Ailing Newnan team gets back to winning ways

by Staff Reports

KENNESAW — A 10-2 victory over North Cobb couldn't have come at a better time for Newnan's boys lacrosse team.

Besieged by injuries this season, the Cougars got a chance to dominate an opponent while taking a win into spring break. A tight game through three quarters ended with Newnan scoring seven unanswered goals in the final period.

Leading 3-2 heading into the fourth quarter, back-to-back goals by J.T. Leake gave the Cougars some breathing room and Drew Winslett netted his second and third goals of the game consecutively to begin to put the game out of reach. Winslett's hat trick gave Newnan a 6-2 advantage wih 7:30 left in the game.

Winslett added his fourth followed by goals from teammates Zach Keene and Spencer Smith, for the latter of his pair. It ended with sophomore defenseman Mike McMahon getting in on the action for a rare goal to close the win.

Newnan returns to play on April 9 at home against Whitewater.
