Newnan and Northgate’s gymnastics teams wrapped up their regular-season schedules on Friday with GymCats sophomore Sydney Goad turning in her best performance over three varsity meets so far this year.
Goad, who opened the season on Feb. 8 at Newnan School of Gymnastics by earning an All-Around championship with a combined score of 37.3, won three events at Oconee while adding another All-Around title with a season-high of 38.2.
Local teams now turn their attention to this year’s GHSA State Qualifier on April 19-20 at The Lovett School. Newnan’s program, which finished four last year while led by four underclassmen, is looking to return to the six-team state championship round.
Goad, who placed fifth in last year’s GHSA Championships on uneven bars as a freshman, has continued to shine at the varsity level. On Friday at Oconee County, she took first on bars, vault and beam en route to adding the All-Around title.
Newnan sophomore Elizabeth Hovey finished third in the All-Around with a score of 36.15, just under her mark in the season opener.
The GymCats defeated Northgate and Pike County in their Feb. 8 debut by scoring 109.2. Senior Alyssa Burnham finished third behind Goad and Hovey in the All-Around with a combined mark of 33.3.
Newnan again hosted both teams on Feb. 22 and won the team competition with a 106.8. Team members this year also include returning state qualifier Katie Shellnutt and Hailey Norton.

The GHSA State Championships will again be held at The Westminster School while scheduled for Friday, April 26.
