March Madness has a whole different meaning to East Coweta’s rifle team.
The Georgia High School State Riflery Playoffs are set to begin with this week’s sectional round with East Coweta finishing third at this year’s Area 5 Championships behind Union Grove and Monroe Area.
East Coweta, which shot a season-high 1,134, opens the state playoffs by hosting North Cobb, the No. 4 finisher in Area 7. The Warriors matched their season high of 1,109 in its area championship match.
The Indians won the Area 5 West Division with a 6-1 record during the regular season while averaging 1,124.75 points per match. Griffin, Luella and Woodward Academy rounded out the area’s six qualifying schools.
This week’s will advance to the semifinal round, which must be completed by March 30. The 12 semifinal winners join the top-two scoring teams among losers in the GHSA Championships on April 13 at the Pool International Shooting Complex at Fort Benning.
East Coweta, meanwhile, is also preparing for this week’s NJROTC Service Championships in Anniston, Ala., after qualifying at the Navy/Marine Championships last month.
Sophomore Glen Lauzon and freshman Destiny Collier both qualified individually for the state championships by posting rounds of 290 (out of 300) during the regular season.
