Newnan head tennis coach Hap Hines joked that his brain might not have been as sharp as his players for scheduling a match on the same day of AP exams, but both teams passed the test on the court on Wednesday nonetheless.
Respective lineups each came through with 4-1 victories in non-region matches at McEachern despite a shift among starters for the Lady Cougars and Cougars.
While No. 1 players Gray Griffies and William Ballou stayed put to earn victories, it featured several doubles players moving up to singles action. Will Vineyard went solo for Newnan’s boys to earn an 8-2 win while Lollie Davis and Lindley Hudson each played at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for the girls.
Davis, who “played real hard,” said Hines, dropped a tough 8-6 decision while Hudson won her match 8-0.
The Lady Cougars also swept doubles matches, both winning 8-1. Claire Hanna and Kaitlyn Hewitt were paired at the No. 1 position while Srushie Patel and Katie Miller played together at No. 2 doubles.
Along with Ballou, Landon Goolsby stayed at his No. 2 singles position while picking up an 8-2 victory a day after battling nearly three hours in a loss at Northgate.

Matt Paschal and Stewart Rand added an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
