Vikings battle Starr’s Mill in loss
Jake Smerka scored three goals and Devan Johns finished with nine saves in net for Northgate, but the Vikings couldn’t escape Starr’s Mill on Friday before falling in a 10-7 loss.

Trailing 5-3 at halftime, Northgate closed to within a goal after the third quarter while outscoring the Panthers 3-1. Smerka had a pair of unassisted tallies before feeding Casey McClendon to pull the Vikings to within a 7-6 deficit.

Northgate’s defense held tough in the second period after falling behind early 5-2. Gage Wozniak, Cameron Wilson, Fritz Smith and Dylan Roach helped hold Starr’s Mill to just a goal over a 24-minute span to help keep the Vikings in the game.

Cole Carter, Mitchell Hutton and Cole Johnson added goals for Northgate in the loss while Jeff Sargent added two assists.

Newnan teams fall at Hillgrove

Things went from bad to worse for Newnan lacrosse lineups on Thursday while being swept by Hillgrove in an Area 1-AAAAAA doubleheader.

First, Hillgrove’s Marilyn Pruitt put the finishing touches on a 9-8 comeback win over the Lady Cougars, who led 5-3 at halftime by scoring the game-winner with 6:42 remaining.

That was followed by a 13-1 loss by Newnan’s boys in a game where sophomore standout Austin Ohliger suffered a broken arm shortly after assisting on the Cougars only goal by David Ozier in the first quarter.

An already young Cougar lineup has been hit hard by injuries of late, entering Thursday without captains Zach Amoroso and Zach Keene, who is out 2-3 weeks with a thumb injury. Sophomore attack Chris Maple may also be out for the season with a back injury.

Sophomore goalie Jordan Surrett made 19 saves in the loss, 10 of which came in the first quarter as Newnan stayed within a 2-1 deficit.

After getting two goals from junior Sable Hawkins and senior Sydney Garmany in the first half, the Lady Cougars (2-3, 1-1) looked in good shape. Hawkins pushed a 6-3 lead with 21:54 to play only to see Hillgrove’s girls reel off five unanswered goals to go ahead 8-6.

Newnan tied it on consecutive goals by junior Savanah Ohliger — her second of the game — and Hawkins before Pruitt scored the last of her two goals with 6:42 left to give the Lady Hawks (3-2, 1-0) a lead for good.

The Lady Cougars return to action on Tuesday at home against Starr’s Mill while the Cougars will travel to Woodward Academy on Wednesday.
