Sports Roundup: Ohliger, Hawkins lead blowout win for Lady Cougars

Newnan’s girls lacrosse team began the season looking for some offensive help to fill scoring holes left by a pair of graduating seniors now at college programs.
The Lady Cougars got plenty of it on Thursday.
Juniors Savannah Ohliger and Sable Hawkins led six Newnan scorers with five goals apiece in a convincing 17-1 rout of Dunwoody to open the annual Inside The Perimeter Tournament in Decatur.
The Lady Cougars built a 12-1 lead at the half and cruised while getting an equally solid effort in goal split by juniors Morgan Gardner and Lindsey Stewart.
Newnan’s girls jumped ahead 4-0 after getting two of senior Sydney Garmany’s three goals over a 10-second span.
Ohliger and Hawkins then traded goals to open the floodgates with Ohilger finishing with six points and Hawkins with six ground-ball controls. Senior Gaby Busby added a pair and junior Anne Jarrett and sophomore Dakota Overton also scored in the victory.

BOYS LACROSSE: Visiting Greater Atlanta Christian proved too strong for a young Cougars lineup on Thursday at Drake Stadium in a 15-3 victory over Newnan. The Spartans took a 6-1 halftime lead before scoring five times to open the third quarter.

Whit Anderson led GAC with six goals in the victory.

Sophomores Austin Ohliger and J.T. Leake scored for the Cougars, with Ohliger netting a pair. Sophomore Chris Maple added an assist while defenseman Mike McMahon led Newnan with nine ground ball scoops.

Jordan Surrett finished with 11 saves for the Cougars.

Greater Atlanta Christian 15, Newnan 3

Goals: GAC — Whit Anderson 6, Sam Harte 4, Parker Stevens, Conor Finneran, Knox Martin, Gunner Cape; Newnan — Austin Ohliger 2, J.T. Leake.

Goalies: Newnan — Jordan Surrett (11 saves)

TENNIS: Northgate teams braved a windy, cold day to pull out respective 5-0 sweeps over Sandy Creek on Thursday at home while remaining undefeated over its first two matches of the season.

The Lady Vikings were led by Lauren Handley’s 8-7 tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles. Both Danielle Rankin (8-2) and Hayley Hasberger (8-0) also won respective singles matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Earning victories in doubles for Northgate’s girls were Amy Salyards and Avery Weatherford (8-1) at the No. 1 spot and Lauren Bowen and Mary Salyards (8-4) at the No. 2 position.

A doubles tandem of Lauren Schexnayder and Sadie Proctor (6-0) along with singles player Emily Donaldson (6-1) earned exhibition victories.

Vikings singles players Hayden Victer and CJ Evans scored 8-0 shutouts at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively, to lead Northgate’s boys.

Larry Sloan added an 8-2 win at No. 2 singles while the Vikings received doubles victories from tandems of Cole Chenowith and Derek Kinsch (8-1) as well as Austin Horvat and Bharath Shankar (8-3).

Alex Armstrong and Andrew Kelly dropped a 6-3 decision for Northgate in a challenge match.

BASEBALL: The Heritage School opened its 2013 season on Thursday with a 16-0 victory over Harvester Christian.
