Prep Sports: Majority of local schedule a wash this week
From Staff Reportssports@newnan.com
Now that Coweta County students have returned from winter break, spring sports athletes have tried to hit the ground running.
Mother Nature continues to have other ideas.
In hopes of salvaging Tuesday’s scheduled game, Newnan soccer teams opted to travel to Westlake after its field at Drake Stadium was deemed too wet to play. It was both teams’ Area 3-AAAAAA opener.
“It’s still a mess out there,” said Newnan atheltic director Stephen Allen.
The Newnan boys are 2-0 this season with a 2-1 victory over LaGrange and a 3-2 win over Shiloh. The Lady Cougars are 1-0 with a 10-0 win over Shiloh.
Northgate was scheduled to play at Creekside in its first Area 4-AAAAA doubleheader. Both lineups had games canceled on Friday as well due to rain. The Lady Vikings entered Tuesday at 1-0 while the Vikings were 0-1.
Scores from both of Tuesday’s soccer doubleheaders were unavailable at deadline.
East Coweta wasn’t quite as lucky on Tuesday, with rain cancelling its area soccer openers against Langston Hughes.
The Indians entered the week with a 1-0 record. Head coach Todd Beldon’s boys squad opened the season with a 5-1 victory over Mountain View before taking last week off.
Chris Luppens’ girls’ squad won its opener against Mountain View 3-1.
Since the games against Langston Hughes and Westlake count in the league standings, both will have to be made up.
East Coweta steps back on the field today against Carrollton, while Newnan plays Friday at home against Peachtree Ridge.
Also on Tuesday, East Coweta had its non-region baseball game against Troup rained out.
The Indians return home today against Sandy Creek at 5:30 p.m.
Northgate also returns to action today at 4:30 against Woodward Academy after Monday’s non-region game against Northside-Columbus was canceled due to weather.
The Vikings are coming off last Thursday’s 12-6 victory over Sandy Creek while improving to 1-2.
