Prep Roundup: Northgate teams win tennis openers

The Northgate tennis teams opened the season with a pair of 4-1 victories at home over Fayette County in dominating fashion.
The Vikings winners surrendered just two games in an opening match that included 8-0 shutout wins by Hayden Victer and Larry Sloan at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Posting 8-1 victories for Northgate’s boys were Cole Chenowith at No. 3 singles and the Vikings’ No. 1 doubles team of Austin Horvat and Derek Kinsch.
At No. 2 doubles, Bharath Shankar and Alex Armstrong dropped a 8-5 decision while Andrew Kelley and Alex Waldren combined for a 6-5 victory in exhibition play.
Lady Vikings singles players Lauren Handley and Hayley Hasberger gutted out 8-5 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Northgate’s Danielle Rankin completed a sweep in singles action with a 8-1 win.

Doubles action saw Laura Bowen and Mary Salyards also pick up an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 position. The Lady Vikings’ No. 1 tandem of Amy Salyards and Avery Weatherford fell 8-4.

In exhibition play, a doubles team of Lauren Schexnayder and Sadie Proctor won 6-0 while singles player Emily Donaldson also earned a victory in the season opener.

BOYS LACROSSE: McIntosh’s boys lacrosse team proved it may be a favorite to win Area 1-AAAAA on Wednesday by dominating Northgate in a 15-4 victory at Henry Seldon Field.

The Chiefs (2-1, 2-0) have won their first two area contests by a combined score of 31-5 following a loss to Class AAAAAA Johns Creek to open the season.

McIntosh built an 8-2 halftime lead while dominating the Vikings’ defensive zone throughout the game. Northgate fell to 0-2 while returning to 1-AAAAA play on Friday at Grady.

LATE TUESDAY

SOCCER: Newnan lineups remained undefeated on Tuesday while opening the Area 3-AAAAAA schedule with a sweep of Westlake.

The Lady Cougars have outscored opponents 16-0 over two games and a scrimmage following a 5-0 victory over Westlake’s girls.

Newnan’s boys improved to 3-0 with a 5-2 win over the Lions. Both teams host Peachtree Ridge on Friday in a non-region doubleheader.
