As frustrating as Friday was offensively for Northgate’s girls basketball team, Saturday’s 28-26 victory over Locust Grove may have been equally satisfying.
After struggling through three quarters — including a scoreless third period — the Lady Vikings’ offensive woes vanished in the closing minutes of Saturday’s game held at Rising Starr Middle School as part of the annual Girls Night Out Basketball Showcase at Starr’s Mill.
Trailing 23-12 in the fourth quarter, Northgate scored 16 points in the game’s final nine minutes including baskets on three late possessions capped off by senior Taylor Kidner’s game-winning layup.
The Lady Vikings led 6-2 after one quarter and 12-8 at halftime before Locust Grove went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter, forcing the comeback.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Katie Mitchell and Rose Barrera tied the game at 26 before Northgate came out of a timeout and successfully ran a play that found Kidner alone inside the paint.

Mitchell led Northgate with nine points and Kidner added six. Amber Radda finished with five points in the win.

The Lady Vikings improved their record to 5-12 overall, matching last year’s win total in a year where Northgate’s girls have just one senior on its roster.

It came a night after a frustrating 39-29 loss at home to Our Lady Of Mercy.

“Defensively, I thought we played hard. We did exactly what we wanted,” said Lady Vikings head coach Matt Trucks. “We were taking good shots. But nothing was falling. It was like there was Saran Wrap over the rim.”

Before heading off to Woodward Academy on Saturday, Northgate’s boys basketball team was able to snap a two-game losing streak with a 59-47 win over Our Lady of Mercy in a non-region game Friday at home.

Both teams hope to carry some momentum into Tuesday’s visit from McIntosh while resuming play in Region 4B-AAAAA. The Vikings have lost three of its first four subregion games — all by single digits.

McIntosh’s boys won the first meeting of the season 63-57 on Jan. 4.

East Coweta’s girls played in the Starr’s Mill Showcase on Saturday night against Center Point (Ala.) after its game against University (N.J.) on Friday afternoon was cancelled.

Both East Coweta lineups return to Region 3-AAAAAA play on Tuesday at home against Douglas County.

Newnan’s boys were unable to keep its momentum going in region play on Friday at Westlake, falling hard 73-49 to a Lions team that took over sole possession of first place at 3-1 in 3-AAAAAA.

The Cougars fell to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in region play heading into Tuesday’s game at Langston Hughes.

Also on Tuesday, The Heritage School hosts Dominion Christian in a key GISA Region 1-AAA game. Dominion handed the Hawks (14-1, 4-1) their only loss of the season on Jan. 11 in Cobb County.

Trinity Christian hosts Calvary Christian in a non-region doubleheader.
