The Heritage School will give their fans a sneak preview of its new gym tonight when it takes on its biggest rivalry – Trinity Christian – in a series of middle and high school basketball games.
Heritage School was given a one-day certificate of occupancy which will allow the Hawks and Lions to christen the new facility in a GISA 1-AAA showdown. After tonight’s contest, Heritage School's remaining games this season will be moved back to the old gym.
“We are happy that our seniors will get to play one game in the gym,” Heritage School Chairman Otis Jones said.
Jones said the school is excited about the new facility that will replace the old gym that was built in 1970.
“It is really modern,” Jones said. “We will now be able to host tournaments in the new gym.”
Action begins with middle school games as the girls play at 4 and the boys at 5. The boys junior varsity takes the floor at 6, followed by the girls varsity at 7 and boys at 8:30.
Heritage School broke ground on the new facility in June, shortly after the 2012 school year ended, and workers have worked close to seven days a week to get the gym completed.

“There is a lot of pride with the new gym,” Jones said. “It just goes along with the way the school is growing.”

As part tonight’s festivities, the Heritage School pep band is scheduled to play.

Earlier this year, Heritage School and Trinity Christian challenged each other in a Can-a-thon and tonight the “Food Fight” trophy will be presented to the winning school.

It will be the second meeting between the two schools this season. Earlier this year the schools split their meeting in Sharpsburg with the Trinity Christian girls defeating the Lady Hawks, and the Heritage School boys knocking off the Lions.

Heritage School's boys (11-1 overall, 3-1 Region 1-AAA) began the year with the best start in school history. Trinity Christian enters the game with a 2-13 record.

Trinity Christian's girls seek their second win against the Lady Hawks and enter the game with a 4-10 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the region. The Lady Hawks are 7-5 overall and 2-2 in region play.
