FAIRBURN — For the second consecutive season, Landmark Christian’s football program finds itself a victory away from reaching a Class A state championship game.
Junior running back Jeremiah Kirkland rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries as the War Eagles rumbled past First Presbyterian Day in the second half en route to a 38-24 victory.
Landmark, the No. 12 seed in the state playoffs, now advances to this week’s semifinals of the Class A Private bracket against No. 9 seeded Prince Avenue, which defeated rival Athens Academy 24-7.
The War Eagles, in its first season under head coach Wayne Brantley, are coming off last year’s first-ever trip to the Class A state finals.
In its quarterfinal victory, Landmark broke a 7-7 with 4:28 left in the first half on a 9-yard score by Kirkland to take a slim seven-point lead into halftime. But momentum swung for good in the War Eagles’ favor starting with a Viking fumble on the second-half kickoff.

Two snaps later, Kirkland scored again to make it 21-7.

First Presbyterian pulled to within a score again on a 46-run by Viking Darron Moore. But two minutes later, Landmark’s offense countered. Kirkland’s third score made it 28-14 with 8:43 left in the third.

The War Eagles tacked on 10 more points in the final four minutes of the period on a 56-yard touchdown by Kirkland and a 28-yard field goal by Stockton McGuire. The latter came after Landmark defender Noah Bryant picked off a pass at the Viking 30 yard-line.
