AUGUSTA — For the second consecutive year, Trinity Christian’s volleyball program sits one victory away from a GISA Class AAA title heading into the final day of the season.
With it, the Lady Lions program has a chance to inch closer to becoming a dynasty today.
Head coach Joe Camp’s lineup easily swept through the first rounds of the Elite 8 tournament on Friday, defeating both Holy Spirit and The Weber School to reach this afternoon’s 2:30 p.m. best-of-five championship match at Augusta Prep.
Trinity Christian faces Region 2-AAA rival Calvary Christian of Columbus in today’s finals. Calvary held off host Augusta Prep in four games after finishing behind the Lady Lions in the region standings.
Led by seniors Micayla Patterson, Ashton Bigler, Rachel Lyons and Elissa Waldrop — all of whom were selected to the GISA All-State team in 2011 — Trinity Christian jumped out to 25-14 and 25-15 wins in the first two games against Weber School before capping off the sweep.
The Heritage School, playing in its first Elite 8 volleyball tournament in its inaugural varsity season under coach Mary Louise Hunt, battled host Augusta Prep, this year’s Region 1-AAA champion. Despite a sluggish first game, the Lady Hawks challenged Augusta in the final two games, losing both 25-18.
Northgate hosts Starr’s Mill at Johnny Brown Gym in today’s GHSA Elite 8 match at 6 p.m., after earning the No. 3 seed in the Class AAAAA bracket. The Lady Vikings (30-20) have won the last two meetings against their Area 4-AAAAA rival after the Lady Panthers swept the first between schools.
