Prep Softball: Newnan's season ends at No. 1 Kennesaw Mountain

KENNESAW – The Newnan Lady Cougars softball team was swept Wednesday night on the road against top-ranked Kennesaw Mountain in the second round of the Class AAAAAA tournament.
Newnan fell 6-1 in the first game and 3-1 in the second. Newnan ends its season at 19-15.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the first game, Newnan was unable to hold off Kennesaw Mountain’s offensive fireworks.
Abbey Garner singled in the first, went to second on a bunt and then went to third and later scored on back-to-back wild pitches.
Kennesaw Mountain came back and tied the game in the second and broke it open in the fifth.
In the second contest with Newnan as the designated home team, Kennesaw Mountain took an early 3-0 lead.
Newnan added its only run of the game it the bottom of the seventh when courtesy runner Deborah Dailey scored.
“I have told people all year, I think this is the best group of girls I have coached since I have been here. They are not just teammates, they are also good friends," Newnan head coach Carrie Gilmore said.
“I told our girls after the game, I really think we can compete with the teams on the north side,” she said. “We have made great strides, and I think we can compete with anybody.”
