The Madras Eagles are soaring alone — and unbeaten — atop the Coweta County Middle School Athletic League football standings after earning their third straight victory to open the 2012 season.
On Tuesday, a late touchdown by Ton Adams lifted the Eagles to a 42-38 win over defending CCMSAL champion Smokey Road after trailing by two scores early.
Four teams, including Smokey Road, are now tied for third place at 1-2 overall.
At home, Madras fell behind 12-0 after one quarter and continued to trail until early in the fourth quarter when Dexter Hills hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Terrence Carter to take a 36-32 Eagle lead.
Smokey Road’s Keonte Anderson’s 2-yard touchdown regained a slim 38-36 advantage for the Wildcats.
But Madras struck one more time for the eventual game-winner when Adams rumbled in from 12-yards for the last of his two touchdowns as the Eagles improved to 3-0 after back-to-back win over last year’s CCMSAL finalists, Smokey Road and Lee.
Dexter Hill’s 70-yard touchdown catch and run on a pass from Carter to open the second quarter finally got Madras’ offense rolling, with the Eagles scoring twice in each of the last three quarters.
Carter threw for two scores and also added a pair of two-point runs, including one on Evans’ final touchdown.
Smokey Road, though, maintained a comfortable 24-14 halftime lead before things started to unravel beginning with C.J. Renders’ 80-yard kickoff return to begin the second half.
Ironically, Smokey Road’s Keonte Anderson ran back the opening kickoff 84-yards to swing momentum in the Wildcats favor in the first quarter and Michael Petty hauled in a 68-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Bryant to get Smokey Road’s offense started for a 12-0 lead.
The Wildcats maintained a two-possession lead in the second quarter by adding touchdowns on a 25-yard pass from Bryant to Kentez Henderson and a 7-yard run by A.J. Robinson — the first of his pair of rushing scores on the day — to help offset Evans’ first touchdown of the game, a 70-yard run.
Renders’ return, however, sparked Madras in the second half and special teams units came up with another score before the end of the third quarter to pull back within two-points. Bennett Rowan blocked a Smokey Road punt and the ball was scooped up by teammate Jackson Sims for a 30-yard touchdown return to pull within a 32-30 deficit.
Hills’ touchdown catch finally gave Madras its first lead of the game in the fourth quarter.
