Senoia Raceway heads into final Saturday of season

Laddie Fulcher held off several challenges throughout the first 20-lap main of Saturday night’s twin features racing card for the Late Models at Senoia Raceway. Fulcher’s first win of the season also helped him secure the track’s newly created Jewel Series crown for the year. The Jewel Series is a series within a series featuring three separate nights of the season combining points in a double feature format.
Trey White was the other winner of the twin bill for the late models while Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway and Kelly Leonard split the main events for the B Cadets. Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran swept the Hobby Stock doubles as did Dorough Bright for the Mini Stocks and Steve Davis in the Bombers.
The double feature finale continues with this Saturday’s races to conclude the 2012 season.
JODECO AUTO SALES LATE MODELS
Despite grabbing the early lead from his outside pole position, Fulcher had his hands full throughout the first 20 lapper for the high powered late model class. Russ Ogletree made several attempts to get past the patriarch of the Thomaston racing family. Ogletree would get alongside Fulcher’s left side door panel on four different occasions, but each time Fulcher would slam the door shut using his outside groove momentum.

In the second feature for the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Models, Stockbridge’s Trey White notched his first win of the season. White held off Fulcher’s son, Shane, to capture the checkered flag. Laddie Fulcher ended up third after a tough battle with LaGrange’s Jamie Carr.

The feature victory coupled with the third place finish was enough to squeak past Locust Grove’s Racin Jason Williams in the final tally for the 2012 Jewel Series title by two points in the three-night series standings.

NEWNAN BONDING B CADET

It was a split decision for the Newnan Bonding B Cadet class on Saturday night. Hampton’s Paul ‘Cowboy’ Holloway snared the victory in the first round of features while Alabama’s Kelly Leonard worked past Newnan’s Ricky Payton to win the second race.

The final points for the Newnan Bonding B Cadets Jewel Series standings ended up being handed to Thomas Mewborn. The Greenville driver was trailing Newnan’s Marcus Caswell in the Jewel Series point heading into the final double feature night of the series, but Caswell opted to run his car in the Jodeco Auto Sales Late Model division on this night.

Mewborn used a fourth and sixth place finish to sew up the Jewel Series title. Mewborn is also in position to win his first season title this weekend as he leads the overall season points race heading into this Saturday night’s final race of the year.

SUMMIT RACING HOBBY STOCK

Clifton ‘Hog Head’ Moran celebrated an early birthday by sweeping the double features, his 18th and 19th wins of the season and the the latter topping the Carrollton driver’s track record from last year’s championship run.

Moran had to work a bit harder for his second win of the night. He battled side by side for the final six laps of the race with 16-year-old Austin Horton. The ‘Grantville Grenade’ worked the high side of the race track while Moran charged through the lowside of the tight turns. Horton slipped up enough in the final turn to allow Moran to beat him by a half car length at the finish line.

Moran won Saturday night’s battle, but Horton won the war as the high school student captured the first Jewel Series title for the Summit Racing Equipment Hobby Stock division

MINI STOCKS

Newnan’s Dorough Bright held off Newnan’s Tim Pettigrew and then Barnsville’s Gary Parker to win both features for the Mini Stocks. The sweep gave the elder Bright’s racing team four feature wins on the season.

Parker topped all competitors in the final ranking for the Mini Stock Jewel Series winning the crown for the inaugural special series.

BOMBERS

Newnan’s Steve Davis picked up his first career Senoia Raceway feature win when he won the first feature for the Bombers. He followed that first win with a second win as he clean swept the eight-cylinder stock car racing division.

Griffin’s David Johnson finished second in both races and won the Jewel Series title for the Bombers.

THIS WEEK

Senoia Raceway host its season championship event on Saturday with points titles to be decided in all five weekly divisions. The top 10 drivers in each division will be honored at the annual awards ceremony next month.

Trey White (1,692 points), Glenn Morris (1,689 points) and Shane Fulcher (1,686 points) come into the final race of the season with a chance to move up the chart and finish in second place behind Racin Jason Williams.

The pit gates open at 5 p.m., and grandstands at 6. Racing will begin around 8 p.m.  For additional information on Senoia Raceway, visit the speedway website at http://www.senoiaraceway.com .
