In so many ways Friday night, Trinity Christian won the battle against John Milledge Academy at McKnight Field in its 2012 season opener.
A year after losing by 22 points to their former region foe, the Lions won the turnover battle and didn’t give the Trojans an extra possession throughout four quarters.
But Trinity Christian was still one or two plays away from winning the war in a 14-6 loss at East Coweta Middle School that both pleased second year head coach Chris Hanson with the team’s progress as much as it pained him to know how close the Lions came to opening the year with a victory.
“I think we played well,” Hanson said. “It was a dogfight. We just came up a little short.”
Down 7-0 at halftime, Trinity Chrisitan put together a scoring drive on its first possession of the third quarter after forcing the Trojans to punt.
Jay Warner’s touchdown run answered John Milledge’s first score and a 7-6 game held until the final eight minutes of play.
Trinity Christian got the ball back for a final time and marched the ball inside the Trojan 40-yard-line while led by quarterback Connor Adams. But the Lions turned the ball over on downs.
The effort came less than a year after Trinity Christian fell 35-13 at John Milledge during Region 2-AAA play. The Trojans (2-0), who dropped down to Class AA, opened their season last week with a 48-7 blowout victory at home against Brentwood.
“John Milledge is a very sound football team,” Hanson said. “We’ll get back to work and get ready for Arlington Christian next week.”
