Local Golf Roundup: Reid wins Kirby Invitational at Newnan CC

Brent Reid fired top rounds over both days of the annual Kirby Invitational at Newnan Country Club to earn first-place honors last weekend among 93 players in competition.
Among a field that included at least 10 college-level players and eight others at the varsity level, Reid jumped out in front with an even-72 on Saturday and followed it up with a Sunday-best 75 to earn a one-stroke victory over Frank Webster.
Zach Lindsey and Louis Brown, each of whom opened with a 76 on Saturday, fired identical final rounds of 1-over 73 to tie for third place.
Eddie Hall, Greg Young and Coastal Georgia freshman Trevor Smith, formerly of Newnan High, tied for third with a two-day total of 150 while all playing in the Championship ‘A’ Flight.
Smith will compete in this weekend’s Georgia PGA Open at Chateau Elan. He qualified for the event on July 19 at Eagle’s Landing Country Club.
TEMPLETON COMPETES IN USGA AMATEUR QUALIFIER
Newnan golfer Brian Templeton fired a 78 during Monday’s U.S. Amateur Qualifier at The Brickyard in Macon. Templeton was two strokes off the pace during a round that included a birdie just before making the turn on No. 18.
SHEPARD, CONNORS COMPETE IN STATE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Coweta golfers Ellen Conners of White Oak and SummerGrove clubs and Jodie Shepard of Newnan Country Club participated in the Georgia Women’s State Amateur Championship on July 23-25 at Deer Creek Golf Club outside Savannah.
Shepard tied for third in the First Flight with a 36-hole score of 250 led by a final round of 79. Connors placed fourth in the Second Flight while finishing with a tournament best 83 on the last day.
BAIK, DANIEL TO COMPETE IN GEORGIA, S.C., GIRLS CHALLENGE MATCH
Following her trip to the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship in California, East Coweta senior Ji Eun Baik competes in this weekend’s Georgia -South Carolina Girls Junior Challenge Match at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans.
She’ll be joined by fellow Newnan golfer Jordan Daniel among Georgia’s representatives in the match-play event. The locals were selected to Team Georgia after finishing among the top four in the Georgia State Golf Associations 33rd Girls Championship in June.
The Coweta duo will be joined on Team Georgia by defending GHSA Class AAAAA champion Rachel Dai of Milton and Haley Austin on McDonough.
