AAU Junior Olympics: Newnan's Ferrell takes bronze in girls 1,500 race walk

Local track and field participants from Coweta County are continuing to compete at the AAU Junior Olympic track and field competition as the event moves into its first full week in Humble, Texas.
Late on Saturday, Newnan’s Aaliah Ferrell took the bronze medal in the 9-and-under girls 1,500-meter race walk with a time of 10:02.27.
Heritage School track standout Chase Parker finished 24th in the seven-event heptathlon, competing in the 17-18-year old women’s division over the weekend. Parker ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.94, the high jump 1-4.5, the shot put 8.08, the 200-meters 28.57, the long jump 4.72, the javelin 25.84 and the 800-meters 2:55.22.
Rising East Coweta freshman Courtlen Burke finished fourth in his 800-meter preliminary race in the 14-year-old division. Burke will compete in the finals of the event this afternoon.
Josiah Quinn, who captured a gold medal in the 1,500-meter race walk, finished 14th in the triathlon.
Quinn, who competes the 9-year-old division, turned in a 1-05 in the high jump, 6-20 in the shot put an a 1:18 in the 800 meters.
He also turned in a personal best in the shot put, finishing 20th with a distance of 21-08.
Samuel Quinn was 38th in the 8-under 1,500 meters with a time of 7:02.03. It was his personal best.
Northgate’s Kemoy Anderson finished 27th in the girls 15-16-year-old 100-meter dash on Monday, running the event in in 12:52.
Anderson’s teammate Hailey Gollnick is expected to compete in the 1,500 on Thursday.

Ryan Quinn ran into some bad luck on Sunday when he was disqualified from the 3,000-meter race walk for a loss of contact. Race-walkng has a strict set of rules that states the athlete’s back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of the rule is called a loss of contact.

This year’s AAU Junior Olympic track and field competition continues through Saturday.
