The Northgate Lady Vikings kept themselves in the winner’s bracket of the Region 4-AAAAA volleyball tournament on Thursday with a sweep of Union Grove (25-23, 25-13) in action played at Ola High School.
With the victory, Northgate, which is ranked fifth in the Class AAAAAA Gasports.com poll, sets up a meeting with second-ranked McIntosh Saturday at noon in a match set for Whitewater High School in Fayetteville.
The winner of that match will clinch a berth to his year’s state Class AAAAA state tournament. The loser has to work its way out of the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination event.
Against Union Grove, Northgate built a 7-1 lead in the first game before having to hold off a Lady Wolverines’ rally.
“We really didn’t talk about playing with a sense of urgency,” Northgate head coach Matt Trucks said. “I just told them to go out there and set the tone for the way they want to play on Saturday.”
Randee Harvel led the Lady Vikings with 11 kills. Savannah Moore and Lexie Rose each had five. Brittany Scarbrough paced the Lady Vikings with 25 assists. She also had two aces. Harvel also added 16 digs and Elle McCord added 9.
Northgate is vying for one of five spots in the state tournament. Normally, the GHSA only takes four teams from each region, but they changed the format this year, since Area 1-AAAAA only has four teams.
