Just the mention of the words Newnan vs. East Coweta are enough to get the average fan of the two schools ready for a war of words.
Simply put, the two schools want to win this game more than any on the schedule, so when the Lady Indians travel to Newnan for a softball game tonight at 6 p.m., the contest could go either way.
While it’s only the first week of September, the only meeting between schools on the 2012 regular season schedule expects to determine this year’s Region 3-AAAAAA champion.
The Lady Indians are 10-3 overall and 1-0 in region play and have won four games in a row. East Coweta comes into the contest fresh off a 15-0 victory over Tri-Cities last week to open region competition. East Coweta has outscored its last four opponents 32-6.
Newnan is 4-5 overall and 1-0 in region play, but beat Douglas County 17-0 in its last outing to open its half of the region schedule. Two of the Lady Cougars’ four wins have been by the mercy rule. Newnan beat Pickens County 12-2 in a five-inning game earlier this year.
In other softball action today, Starr’s Mill plays host to Northgate in a Region 4-AAAAA contest.
The Lady Vikings, who won the Class AAAA tournament last year are 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the region and ranked second in most recent gasports.com poll. Starr’s Mill is ranked ninth.

Both of the Lady Vikings’ wins have come against Ola (3-2) and Union Grove (5-3). Those two teams are also ranked in the latest Class AAAAA Coaches’ poll.

Whitewater is ranked first in the Region 4-AAAAA poll, giving the league five of the 10 spots in the weekly rankings.

The Lady Vikings travel to Whitewater on Sept. 18.

Other softball games on the slate today include Heritage Christian at Grace Christian and Oak Mountain at The Heritage School.
