Kiwanis Club chartered in Grantville

On Oct. 8, a historic event took place in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Grantville.

The Kiwanis Club of Grantville held its Charter Night celebration at the church. Kiwanis has a long history in Coweta County, and there are several clubs in the Newnan area.

The club is a milestone, however, for Grantville.

Casey Houston, Grantville's mayor, gave the welcome. Mick Maguire, past governor of Georgia District Kiwanis International, presented the club charter to Kearta Deon Sewell, the club's president. Tom Beckham, the current district lieutenant governor, also attended the meeting.

The members who helped build the club were recognized and presented the New Club Building Award. That award was signed by the Kiwanis International president.

All charter members present for the ceremonies received charter member lapel pins.

There are 31 charter members in the new Kiwanis Club. They are James Berry, Virginia M. Boyd, Willie H. Boyd, Henrietta Bryant, Michael Bryant, Susan H. Burdett, Selma P. Coty, Clifford Dyes, Katherine B. Garrett, Beulah Jean Haynes, Ruby Hines, Casey Houston, Rochelle Jabaley, Dee Latimore-Berry, Edward Luttrell, Sandra Luttrell, Alice L. Malcolm, John Malcolm, Rodney H. Mowery, Dorothy "Dot" Moss, Hugh Nash, Christopher Owens, Darwin Palmer, Debi Rogers, Kearta Deon Sewell, Donya Sewell, Mary L. Sewell, Shelly T. Smith, Cheryl Stitcher, Laura Woods and Charles E. Wyatt.

The club has already proven to be an organization that does more than just meet. Make a Difference Dayis a national day set aside helping others. It was held this year on Oct. 24.

A group of Grantville Kiwanians gathered early in the morning. They "helped clean up around the signs platform and tree located on Griffin Street," said member Willie Boyd. "We have made a difference in the appearance of this area.."
