Do Mormons believe the same doctrine as other Christians?
Was Joseph Smith a latter-day saint? Should you vote for a Mormon as president?
Mormonism is one of the fastest growing religious sects in the United States and Latin America. Nearly 2 percent of U.S. adults claim to be Mormons. The fast growth rate of the Mormon Church is one reason Christians need to be well-versed in the Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Church.
Mormon leaders want to blur the lines of doctrinal differences, claiming their sect is just one among many denominations. In their world the worst thing you can be is an apostate -- someone who left the Mormon Church. The LDS Church warns its members about reading literature not published by LDS.
Mormons argue they are Christians, claiming that anyone is Christian if they profess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. When speaking with a Mormon, it often will not be long before they will start to share their testimony. They "know these things are true" because they think they have had feelings given by God.
Mormonism cannot be considered orthodox Christianity because the religion itself begins with a rejection of historic Christianity.
• The Earth is one of several inhabited planets ruled over by gods and goddesses, who were at one time humans on other planets. Mormonism is polytheistic -- multiple gods -- in its core.
• The Trinity consists of three gods born in different times and places; the Father begot the Son and Holy Spirit through a goddess wife in heaven.
• Humankind is of the same species as God. God begot all humans in heaven as offspring of his wife or wives, who were sent to Earth for their potential exaltation to godhood.
• Salvation is resurrection. Exaltation to godhood for eternal life in the celestial heaven must be earned through self-meriting works.
Mormonism is another religion. It does not have an orthodox view of the Trinity and the full and complete deity of Jesus Christ. One sentence from the teaching of Mormonism says it all: "As man now is, God once was. As God now is, man may become." They have every right to believe that, and we should protect that right under the First Amendment, and it shouldn't be a disqualification for office.
But it doesn't qualify as orthodox Christianity.
Unfortunately some individuals believe Mormons are harder to win to Christ than others. But all unbelievers are dead in their trespasses and sins, as Ephesians 2:1 states. The salvation of Mormons is no more difficult for God than that of any other believer.
If you're talking to a Mormon, the most important thing is to show that we as Christians worship eternal God who never was a man. You have to tell them, "The Christ I'm telling you about is different from the Christ you're talking about." Isaiah 43:10 says: "No god was formed before Me, and there will be none after Me."
For a Mormon, "God" is not the monotheistic God revealed in the Old and New Testaments. I remember talking to a Mormon who once told me, "God has hands, feet, toes and used to be a man, just like you." He continued to tell me if I work hard enough I too could become a "god."
We must heed the warning in Galatians 1:8 that if even an angel from heaven preaches a Gospel other than that of the apostles, let him be eternally condemned. If you prepare yourself to witness to a Mormon, God will provide the opportunity.
I believe in Jesus Christ as the Only Begotten of God in the flesh and the only Way whereby man can be saved. I believe he took upon Him our sins, pains and weaknesses and that because He did that we don't have to walk alone. I believe we can find joy in this life by following Jesus' example and be prepared by following Him to return to live with God. I am a Mormon.

Thank you reverend for bringing up Galatians 1:8. The problem for you is that you fail to see how this verse applies to the fourth century creeds that you want to call "historical" Christianity. You falsely represent the LDS Church as denying historical Christianity as if Christianity started out believing what those creeds assert. Please show us where the words of the council of Nicea are to be found in the New Testament? As far as Galatians is concerned, do you have the records of Paul's initial missionary teachings to the people at Galatia? Your scriptural reference is from a later letter, not from his original teachings to them. The creeds teach a different understanding of God than can be claimed for the first Christians, yet you use this verse against those who seek to restore precisely what they taught.

Now isn't this a nice conincidence to have this lengthy discussion about why Mormons aren't Christians. This is just a subtle reminder for all of you Georgia folks who will be voting in the presidential primary that the Mormon candidate is not Christian (according to Mr. Ausbin). You've got to look out for those sneeky Mormons who think they're Christians, etc. Yeah, perfect timing. Why am I not surprised.

Pastors need to learn the Mormon doctrine to tell their congregants not to join the Mormon faith. Why? The people are his meal ticket! If they leave, he doesn't get their money. Mormon pastors say to search, find the truth...and not a dime goes into Mormon pastors pockets. Well, unless you consider having a full time job outside of Sunday services, a money making scheme Mormons made up to compensate the Mormon pastors income.

Gamaliel's advice to the Sanhedrin (who had condemned Christ)concerning treatment of the disciples preaching resurrection in Acts 5 is a wise pattern for how to deal with any who claim to be of God. Leave them alone and let time be their judge. Even Mormons.

Thanks Daniel! The last Mormons I have spoken to (converts, not 2nd generation) agree that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23), the penalty of sin is death (Romans 6:23) and the list goes on. There is not any sign of life as a Christian about them except their claim to be a believer.

I wonder how the Sanhedrin would have judged Christianity's orthodoxy at the time of Christ.

"The LDS Church warns its members about reading literature not published by LDS."
This is not true. I read lots of literature from other Christian churches. The LDS Church does warn its members not to read literature about the LDS Church by other churches.
This is because they tend to twist the truth, to take it out of context, to present the LDS Church in as negative a light as possible.
This article is an example. There are some trueish statements here. However, there are plenty of assumptions, twisting of definitions, and glossing over of similarities between Restored Christianity and Creedal Christianity so as to give people the wrong impression about the LDS faith.

While this pastor doesn't appear to know Mormonism as well as he thinks he does (few of his statements are official LDS doctrine) he is correct that Mormonism doesn't qualify as "orthodox" Christianity. However, his reasoning of Mormonism - "the religion itself begins with a rejection of historic Christianity" - is ironic. The very definition of Protestantism is the exact same, the rejection of historic Christianity (Catholicism).

You say "Christians need to be well versed in Mormon theology" in the opening paragraph and then the rest of the article is spent giving false info. Thank you sooo much for telling others about MY faith. Where did you get your info from?? Ever been to a Mormon church service? Maybe you should before you write another article. Rather than "witness" to a Mormon, talk with them and we can learn from each other

I was born and raised Lutheran... this Daniel is obviously afraid of studying more accurate materials than the anti-mormon diatribe as his source of truth... of course he earns his money by what he teaches...

Give me a break. You can split theological hairs all you want to carefully carve Mormons out of Christianity but you are delusional in doing so. Talk to any Mormon that believes he/she has a "relationship" with Jesus and prays for trivialities like parking spaces and lost car keys and soon you'll see that they're just as "Christian" as anyone else.
The Romans thought Christianity was just a strange brand of Judaism.
To an atheist like me, this squabbling over things that you suppose you "know" so well (e.g the trinity which I defy anyone to give me a clear definition for).
To an outsider it looks like two spoiled kids arguing over a toy. As long as you both engage in telepathy multiple times a day with a zombie Jew who MAY OR MAY NOT be his own father, don't expect me to take you seriously.
On the other hand, the country IS in financial crisis and I want an expert financial mind running it as CEO in chief, that person is Romney. He can wear his special underwear, and ya'll "Christians" can try to figure out why you object to gay marriage. I'm going for the guy that can get us into black.

Any group of religiously orianted people who have an extra source of Biblical revelation is a cult. The Book of Morman makes LDS a cult. Not one Morman I ever spoke with has ever confessed Jesus Christ as their only Lord and only Savior. They say pray to the Holy Spirit, not God throuh Jesus but to the Holy Spirit for salvation. They do worship another Jesus. That is sad. As far as people go they are some of the nicest people you will meet unlike the Baptist. Baptist are just as legalistic as Mormans but the Mormans are not hypocrits about it.

Pastor Ausbun's comments this morning on whether or not Mormons are Christian were a good read. As a Mormon, I would disagree with some of his conclusions--such as the idea that "the LDS Church warns its members about reading literature not published by the LDS." If that were true, I wouldn't be reading the Times Herald or any other newspapers. Mormons are encouraged to read lots of literature published outside its own presses. Otherwise, how would they attend public schools and universities? The Pastor's comments are a good start to continuing dialogue.

A Baptist condemning a morman about works. What a laugh. Just listen to any Baptist "pastor" who acts like a prist and demand those tithes every time the church door is open. The Morman church gets their 10% but the Baptist church does not. If works makes a church a cult then the Baptist church is the biggest cult around with their demand of tithing.

I am voting for the Mormon.
He prove himself as a suscessful bussinessman and besdides we are not electing a Pastor-in-chief. I know alot of christians that fall short of the what Christ said. The Gospels tells us that not everyone that call me father will enter under my roof.
Biden and Sebelaus proved that just because you are Catholic does not show that you practice the faith.Anyone can called theirselve a christian. I am now into "show me".
